Which country is eligible for translation ?

If you are planning to drive in Japan, you may wonder which country can use their driver licence in Japan.

The answer depends on whether your country has a reciprocal agreement with Japan or not. According to the Japan Automobile Federation (JAF), there are 32 countries and regions that have such an agreement, which means that their driver licence holders can drive in Japan with an official Japanese translation of their licence.

These countries and regions are: Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hong Kong, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Monaco, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Singapore, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, Turkey, United Kingdom and United States.

If your country is not on this list, you will need to obtain an International Driving Permit (IDP) issued by a signatory to the 1949 Geneva Convention before coming to Japan. You cannot apply for an IDP in Japan. You will also need to carry your original driver licence along with the IDP when driving in Japan.
